Rail Walkers Free ((FREE)) Download
I've recommended some of my favorite mobile apps below. All of these are available on Apple's iOS devices through their app store, and many of them are also available for Android, Windows Phone, and BlackBerry platforms. I've noted whether they're free or must be paid for, and whether they're self-contained (Internet connection not necessary after the initial download) or require ongoing Internet access. While it's possible to download these apps over any Wi-Fi network, plan ahead and try to grab the ones you want while you're still at home. This is by no means a comprehensive list. New apps are hitting the market every day. To find the latest, browse the Apple App Store or the Android Market (look under "Travel"), or search for tips on travel blogs and websites.

The iPhone app OffMaps (pay) will store multiple maps for later use. You need an Internet connection to download maps, but once that's done, the maps are accessible anywhere. Google Maps for Android phones have a similar capability that lets you download and cache (save) several maps for use offline (free). For much more fully featured GPS apps for your mobile phone, check out those from TomTom, Garmin, and other GPS device makers, though European maps for these tend to be very expensive.
This 9-mile Empire State Trail section begins in the Town of Lloyd, at Walkway Over the Hudson State Park, which is a spectacular 1.5-mile park built on an historic railroad bridge high above the Hudson River. Parking, visitor centers and public restrooms are available at the Park. The route runs west from the Walkway for 7 miles on the Hudson Valley Rail Trail, which is a paved off-road trail, dedicated to bicyclists and hikers only. The final 2 miles of this section, from where the Route 299 bridge crosses the NYS Thruway into downtown New Paltz, is an on-road section, appropriate for experienced bicyclists and walkers comfortable traveling on road shoulders next to vehicle traffic. This segment ends in the Village of New Paltz, at the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail at the intersection of Route 32 and Mulberry St.
The Partnership has published a range of guides for both walkers and cyclists in the Stour Valley. While most of these are available as free downloads online, others can be purchased directly from us as full colour booklets.
These are free to download, or can be ordered from us as paper copies and may be available from either the Canterbury Visitor Information Centre (01227 378100), or Ashford Gateway Plus (01233 330316).
